The LGBT Resource Center at UCSD provides a visible presence on campus and enhances a sense of connection and community among LGBT faculty, staff, students, alumni and the UCSD Community. Let the LGBT Resource Center be your home away from home. We encourage you to get involved by visiting the Center and connecting with members of our community. Subscribing to the Rainbow Newsletter will give you up to date information on queer life at UCSD. We encourage you to participate in the student groups, LGBT peer support groups, and the UCSD LGBT Staff and Faculty Association.

Out and Proud Week:

May 5-9, 2008

Out and Proud Week presents the largest opportunity for community visibility on the UCSD campus.  It is a week-long group celebration and private reflection on the achievements of LGBTQI-identified students, staff, and faculty and our allies.  It is also a time for public awareness and discussion of current LGBT issues on the state and national levels.

All Week
The LGBT Resource Center will be on Library Walk the week of May 5-9, 2008, from 10am-3pm.  We'll be tabling with folks from various LGBT student, staff, and faculty organizations.  Come visit us at the rainbow balloon arch!

Monday, May 5: Scholarship Fundraiser

5:00pm-7:00pm

Come join us as we fundraise for the LGBT Resource Center undergraduate scholarship.  20% of the proceeds you spend at Round Table will go to the $1,000 scholarship.  Bring friends, share a meal, and raise money for an awesome cause!

5:00pm Reception, with film immediately following

Admission: FREE

Bree is a perfectly adjusted conservative transsexual woman. Born Stanley, a genetic male, she's about to take the final step to becoming the woman Stanley always wanted to be -- until she finds out she is the parent of a long-lost 17 year-old son. Afraid to tell the rebellious teenager the truth, Bree embarks on a journey with him that will challenge and change both their lives and bring them closer to the truth of their connection. TRANSAMERICA is a funny, touching, completely modern look at the contemporary American family, starring Emmy Award-winner Felicity Huffman and Kevin Zegers.

TRANSAMERICA has won numerous festival prizes, including awards for best film at the Berlin Film Festival, San Francisco's Frameline Festival, and the Woodstock Film Festival, and the award for Best Screenplay at France's 2005 Deauville Festival of American Film.

Wednesday, May 7: Hidden Voices - The Lives of LGBT Muslims

Speaker: Faisal Alam

5:00pm

Mandeville Center East

This presentation aims to dispel myths about Islam, a religion that is commonly misunderstood in today's world. By exploring the complex diversity within the Muslim world and by illustrating the many challenges facing queer Muslims, this presentation will bring new light into the lives of an often invisible and silent community: Muslims who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning. LGBT human rights, the concerns of women and religious minorities and the history of sodomy laws & Islamic Shariah laws will also be discussed. Additionally the history of the queer Muslim movement in the United States post 9/11 and the suppression of LGBT people in predominantly Muslim countries under the guise of the "war on terror" will also be explored in this interactive presentation.

All members of the LGBT community and our allies are welcome to attend.  Formal English high tea, finger sandwiches, and petit fours will be served.

Friday, May 9: Julia Serano and Anniversary Celebration

4:00pm, with reception immediately following

Eucalyptus Point

Come join us for Julia Serano's spoken word performance!  Julia Serano is an Oakland, California-based writer, spoken word performer, trans activist, and biologist. Julia is the author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity (to be published by Seal Press in June, 2007), a collection of personal essays that examines the ways in which misogyny frames many popular stereotypes and assumptions about transsexual women. In recent years, Julia has gained noteriety in transgender, queer, and feminist circles for her unique insights into gender.

Julia's performance will be followed by an Anniversary Celebration to honor the LGBT Resource Center’s second year in its permanent home.  Refreshments will be served.
